In this lesson, the students will explain how to use niche marketing to gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace. In this lesson, students will research information from the IRS pertaining to starting a business, tax issues, and keeping records. The Virtual Business Challenge focuses on different concepts found within the simulation. FCCLA members will not be able to control every concept, and are only able to manipulate the actions enabled for that specific Challenge.
A virtual enterprise is rarely associated with an independent legal corporation or brick-and-mortar identity of its own. Environments such as Second Life have enough economical activity to be viable for commerce and one can make a living from sales of virtual property, products and services to virtual customers in these virtual worlds. In the most extreme example, all employees work virtually, and the “headquarters” is wherever the CEO lives.

At a bare minimum, virtual businesses are defined by the lack of a physical location where customers can interact with the company face-to-face. A virtual business is any business that conducts all or most of its business via the internet. It may or may not have some kind of physical presence—such as an office or warehouse—but there isn’t a physical location that customers can visit. The competition, co-sponsored by ICHRIE, Collegiate DECA and Knowledge Matters, challenged students to manage a hotel profitably, setting revenue management policies, and operating the hotel restaurant. Participants were ranked based on a balanced scorecard that included profitability, customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction, and inventory levels.
